Map of US highway 85 and family
(Note: the two maps below are intended to display side-by-side. If you have a smaller monitor, the second map may display underneath the first.)
Map 1 (of 2), below left, shows the "early" US 85 and the routings of its original branch highways:
US 85 is represented by the purple line from Ambrose ND (its north endpoint until 1944) to Las Cruces NM (its south endpoint until 1935).
US 185 (historic) is the red line from Cheyenne to Orin WY.
US 285 [I] (historic) is the red line from Laramie WY to Denver CO.
US 385 [I] (historic) is the red line from Raton NM to San Antonio TX.
US 485 (historic) is the red line from Santa Fe to Raton NM.
None of US 85's original branch routes remain. Compare the map below to Map 2 (below right), which shows current routings (the text accompanying map 2 is below the maps):
Map 2 (of 2), above right, shows modern US 85 and the routings of its current branch highways:
US 85 is the purple line beginning in Fortuna ND. Its southern terminus is still in El Paso TX; however, US 85 is not signed along its implied route through southern Colorado and all of New Mexico. These unsigned segments are shown in red.
US 285 [II] is the blue line from Denver CO to Sanderson TX.
US 385 [II] is the blue line from Deadwood SD to Big Bend National Park TX.
