End of US highway 67

US 67 was an original 1926 route, though at the time it was significantly shorter than it is today: Fredericktown MO to Dallas (you can view photos from there on this page). Why Fredericktown? Well, originally US 61 didn't run through Perryville to get between St. Louis and Cape Girardeau. Instead, it essentially followed today's US 67 corridor from St. Louis to Fredericktown; and then modern MO hwy. 72 from Fredtown to Cape G. So there was no reason for US 67 to go any further than Fredtown.

US 67 between St. Louis and Fredtown has been rerouted over the years. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think US 61 originally would've come into Fredtown from the north via what is now Route OO. On the edge of Fredtown it would've gone east via today's MO 72 (Trail of Tears Drive). But westbound MO 72 (Lincoln Drive) would've been the original east beginning of US 67.

As you can see, this is actually within the limits of Junction City, a tiny municipality that's pretty much surrounded by Fredericktown. Anyway, that view is from what would've been northbound US 61, which continued ahead via Route OO. To the left on MO 72 (Lincoln) was the east beginning of US 67. Heading northeast on Lincoln, the view looks like this:

That would've been the end of US 67. Northbound US 61 was to the left, and southbound was to the right. (The sign at far right is the same one shown in the first photo above.)

Already by 1930 the south end of US 67 was extended to the Mexico border in Presidio TX. Until about 1988 the border crossing was in a different location, slightly to the south of the current terminus. Today US 67 bypasses the central part of Presidio, and border traffic has been rerouted to a newer crossing. The last southbound sign is a mile or two north of the border, but southbound signage also exists at the south end of Business 67, which is essentially right at the customs area:

In the foreground you can see the American customs facility; just around the bend is the bridge into Mexico. I was surprised to see the snow-capped peaks in the distance... I believe that must be the Sierra del Hueso. Note the gore at lower left - we'll see that again in a photo below - but first, a closeup of the south end...

US 67 becomes Mexico highway 16. Now, back to Texas - this is the view greeting drivers as they emerge from customs:

The gore just ahead is the same one visible in the first photo above. Mainline US 67 now continues by curving to the left. The road to the right connects with original US 67 about a quarter-mile ahead: the junction of O'Reilly Street and Thompson Street. Thompson carried US 67 traffic south to Bridge Street, which in turn led to the original border crossing. That's been vacated now, and Bridge leads only to a property that is apparently still owned by the federal government, but is perhaps leased to a private company...

...but if you look closely at that building with the covered pull-through, doesn't it look like that may have been the old customs building? If you know for sure, and/or if you know what word(s) used to be in that archway, please let me know.

Also in 1930, the north end of US 67 was extended to Rock Island IL; you can view photos from there on this page. Then in 1934, the north end of US 67 was extended into Dubuque IA. At first it ended on Locust Street at 4th Street:

That's looking west on 4th at Locust - you can see the Fenelon Place Elevator going up the bluff in the distance. US 67 began to the left. After about 10 years a new bridge was built, and then, as Jason puts it, "US 67 ended here at the intersection of Locust and Dodge Streets. This is looking northward on Locust, which carried US 67 (as well as US 52, US 61, and US 151 until the early 1990's)."

Dodge serves as US 20 across the Mississippi River to Illinois.

That was the situation until 1967, when the north end of US 67 was truncated back to its current terminus at US 52 just outside Sabula IA (pronounced suh-BYEW-luh). The shot below is looking east on IA hwy. 64 at the north end of US 67:

US 52 and IA 64 continue ahead into Sabula, and then on over the Mississippi. US 67 used to continue to the left with US 52 into Dubuque (see section above), which is about 44 miles to the north.
